[... Right. Killing your cousin in a bear hug is probably against the law in America. She'll loosen the hug a bit, but only so she can get a good look at him]
When did you get back? Today? [She glances up only to see no one with him]
[Ha... well, Sakura doesn't look at all surprised by Shinji's assessment of Howard, and has to hide her smile before it forms. But her friend had promised to watch out for her cousin, and so she believes that above all else.]
They both promised to look after you, so I hope you weren't too hard on them.
["Freaked out" isn't an inaccurate statement, though Sakura is reluctant to agree with him. But thankfully the day is saved when Akemi -- one of her black kittens -- comes pacing along from the still-open door, meowing in curiosity at this newest human.]
[Akemi is the kitten that demands attention, so Shinji's already doing the right thing. After a round of purring, she butts her head into his hand so he'll scratch her ears, too.]
[Ha, as she expected. Grinning at his enthusiasm, she'll usher Shinji inside and knock the door closed with the back of her foot before allowing Akemi to drop back down to the floor.]
Okay, the kitchen's this way.
[Has Shinji ever seen her apartment before? Well, if not, he gets proof that his cousin isn't living in any regal splendor despite their backgrounds involving wealth. Not only is it rather cramped, but there are little details that speak of the apartment's age: spots of water damage hidden in the walls, a few spider cracks if you look for them, the relatively matted feel of the carpets.
But it's also clean, proof of Sakura's efforts to keep the place homey. Upon entering the kitchen, she nods at a chair for Shinji to sit in while she fetches the cocoa from a cupboard.]
So, what did you do on the boat? Did it take you somewhere...?
[She told him her apartment wasn't as nice as his house, and he definitely agrees with her - but right now all he really cares about is that it has her in it and she's not worried anymore.
So he happily takes a seat at her kitchen table.]
We went to this little town called Respartum - it was really weird? Nobody would take any money and we had to do this stupid fetch quest to pay for our room at the inn...
[It was totally a fetch quest despite being a thing that happened in real life.]
And this sleazy guy who wanted to buy the town came and freaked all the locals out, but I found the deed he'd forged somebody's signature on so we could prove he was no good!

I'm okay, you can let go now...

When did you get back? Today? [She glances up only to see no one with him]
Did Mrs. Brisby look after you?
no subject
[Because of course they were worried too.]
Basically everybody was trying to look after me. It's not like I needed it...
no subject
Then you met Howard-san? And Odasaku-san as well?
no subject
[So not impressed.]
Mr. Odasaku seems okay. Definitely more okay.
no subject
They both promised to look after you, so I hope you weren't too hard on them.
no subject
[He totally was.]
Were you okay here? You seemed really freaked out earlier...
no subject
["Freaked out" isn't an inaccurate statement, though Sakura is reluctant to agree with him. But thankfully the day is saved when Akemi -- one of her black kittens -- comes pacing along from the still-open door, meowing in curiosity at this newest human.]
Akemi, you know you're not supposed to be out.
no subject
I don't think cats listen to humans, they just do whatever they want.
[He's still going to crouch down and try to pet Akemi anyway, because cute.]
no subject
[Akemi is the kitten that demands attention, so Shinji's already doing the right thing. After a round of purring, she butts her head into his hand so he'll scratch her ears, too.]
But it seems she likes you a lot.
no subject
Well, obviously she likes me. If she's your family, and I'm your family, then she's my family too.
no subject
[Well, she'll leave Shinji to the petting, though she does glance behind her at the still open door. They really should take this conversation inside]
Are you busy? The least I can do is invite you inside. You can tell me all about your mission.
no subject
[They totally needed him, Sakura, it was important.]
no subject
[Smiling indulgently, she finally stands back up, bringing a meowing Akemi along with her.]
Though before that, I think I have some hot chocolate I need to get rid of while you're here.
no subject
[He knows she's joking, but still: hot chocolate sounds great.]

[Said with more interest this time, and not just stoking the fires of Shinji's ego. She glances over her shoulder after grabbing both of them a mug.]
Did you find out why he wanted to buy the town in the first place?
the town is called Pesgare and I can't remember names
[Luckily he was stopped this time! Thanks to Shinji! And also other people.]
no subject
[Smiling over her shoulder]
I'm sure everyone must've been grateful.
no subject
[Shinji's expression turns a touch more unsure. Being a hero and finding the key evidence is great, but...]
Are you still mad about me going?
no subject
[That much is true, as is the fond expression she offers.
Except there's a pause then, weighted in reluctance because Sakura knows what she wants to say next]
Are you being asked to go back?
[She poses it as a question instead, while she turns back to fetch some milk]
no subject
[He already know Sakura won't be happy about that, even if she says she's not mad anymore.]
